Crystal Reports and Unicode input

Hi!

I'm trying to use Crystal Reports with our proprietory data (some of it stored in CodeBase database, some in text files, some is captured in runtime, etc). The simplest solution would be to create comma separated file and pass it to CR. It works, except our text fields can be in a variety of langauges (some european and Chinese Simplified and Traditional). Our software uses Unicode, so I'd prefer to create Unicode CSV file. These files cause CR to fail - it is obvious that CR does not realise that the file is Unicode. I tried other options, and so far I've discovered that CR can read Unicode XML files, while treating them as ADO.Net databases. This is not the best way out, as I suspect it requires .Net framework to be present on target PCs, and it's a big install.

So - any ideas? What simple format can I use to pass Unicode text to CR, or may be some other approaches.

I'm using: CR ver XI, target OS - Win2000 and XP, we can not expect target PC to have anything but Windows installed

Many thanks

balrogPS, when I said CR fails - it does not crash, it simply shows incorrect column names (the first one includes Unicode BOM), number of columns and and all values are wrong
balrog|||hi!
i'm stuck in code and i came across your post when i was searching 4 a solution.
I want to connect to crystal through an XML data source. Im using Visual C++ 6.0. I know how to do it by using an Acess db, bt cant do it using XML.
Can u tell me how?
Im using ADO to connect, bt it gives an exception:
>>_bstr_t bstrAccessConnect ("Provider='CR XML v3.6';Data Source Name='RGenXML';");

Whts wrong here? Help pleeese...

Thanx! Hope 2 hear frm u!|||In Crystal Reports (http://www.saveonsupport.com) there is a ChrW function which takes a unicode number and returns the matching character. Have you tried this?sql

Crystal reports and page breaks

I have a requirement from our users that they want to add page breaks into the middle of a text field in our application.

This text is being printed in a Crystal report, so they would have the facility then to split text over 1 or more pages without coding needed to be done.

Is it possible to type in (use of varous keys e.g. Ctrl + Shift + A) a special character in the text field which Crystal Reports will process as a new page?

Any assistance would be gratefully received.you can use chr(13). Create new formula having this code

left({field},100)+chr(13)+mid({field},101,len({Feidl})

and set can grow propery to true

Crystal Reports 9 - Need To Display Spanish Text

I need to display Spanish text (...accented words, upside down question marks, tildes' over the 'N's, etc...) in Crystal reports 9.

The text is coming from an Oracle database that has been updated to an 8-bit character string to properly display the text in the database.

But when the text appears in the Crystal report, none of the Spanish text characterists appear. It just comes out as plain text with a small box where a Spanish character should appear.

How do I make the text appear 'Spanish', accents and all?

I'm a Crystal novice, so please explain your solutions as non-technically as possible.

Thanks!It took me 2 days of Googling, but I found the answer to my own question which I'll share here.

Crystal Reports 9 (...and 10 and 11 as far as I know...) requires a downloadable patch that allows the report to display unicode characters in other languages.

The paper explaining this problem can be found at: http://technicalsupport.businessobjects.com/KanisaSupportSite/search.do;jsessionid=B460E0FF9F8305201D62DC3CA247AB2D?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=c2014141&sliceId=&dialogID=6000219&stateId=1%200%205998262

The downloadable patch to fix this problem can be found at:
http://technicalsupport.businessobjects.com/KanisaSupportSite/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=http--supportbusinessobjectscom-communityCS-FilesandUpdatesNoNav-cr90mainwinenzipasp&sliceId=&dialogID=6060592&stateId=1%200%206058581

This is the patch for correcting this problem for English unicode characters. There are also patches available for French, German and Japanese unicode characters as well.

I hope this helps anyone who has run into the same problem.

Crystal Report issue - passing text value in vb to crystal

I have a date time picker for begin date and end date to generate my report. I want the begin date and end date selected in my VB App to show on my crystal report as a selected date range. For example, I want my report header to show something like this:

Date Range: 12/14/06 - 12/31/06

This is most likely an easy solution, but I am new to Crystal. What would be the proper way to do this?Figured this one out.....|||How do you resolved this, can you put your code here?

Crystal Report Generic Text Printer - Printing Problem

I use mostly 10cpi fonts and for figures 17cpi fonts.Install the latest CR9 service pack. If problem remains, use another printer driver.

Crystal Report Doubt(Subreport)

Hi,
I have inserted a Sub-Report into a Main Report. My Sub-Report is placed in the middle of the main report i.e there are Text objects in the main report placed in such a way that some of the Text objects of the main report are on top of the Sub-Report and some others are at the bottom of the Sub-Report. When I populate the sub-report and the main report with data...

I have 2 scenarios :

Scenario 1 :
If my Sub-Report has very less data(say only one Row) then, I want the Text objects of the main report to move up, without leaving any gap/space that I allocated for my Sub-Report.

Scenario 2 :
If my Sub-Report has more data(say 20 Rows) then, I want the Text objects of the main report to scroll/move down .

I have tried using the "Can Grow" option in the Format section of the subreport, but it is not working properly, ie if there are more rows then the rows of the subreport are overlaping with the rows/Text Objects that I placed in the Main Report and the rows of the sub-report are moving to the right.

Awaiting for ur reply.Hi,
You have to set can grow for the sub report. Put your text in a new section below subreport. For example if your sub report is in details section then you can create one more details section and put your required text in this new section. and use fit to section.

bye

Crystal Report Can Grow Growing too much

Hello,

I'm experiencing something really weird. When i set the "Can Grow" option on my report, all my text is now displaying, but the field is sized much larger than what the text is using. So i end up having a report with rows seperated almost 1 to 2 inch from each other.

Has anyone expierences this before, or can explain this behavior to me?

ThanksIf one of the rows has data with higher length then other rows will also occupy same width. Thats correct. Otherwise increase the width manually

Crystal Report

I am using VB 6 with MS Access as Back End. I saved a path name of a text file in a field of Access MDB. I am using Crystal report 8 for creating reports. Will anybody help me to print the contents of the file stored in the field in the crystal report? (For eg the field contains the value "c:\project\test.txt" How to print the contents in the "detail" portion of the crystal report. When I select the field, the file name comes not the contents). Pl. help me.
Meenakshi.RMeenakshi,
I dont think there is a way to do exactly you want. But you can use heperlink option. Right Click on any field; Goto Format Field and Select HyperLink and File and Select the text file. When running the report, if you click that Field, then the text file will be opened.|||Madhi,
Each record has a different text file. With your suggestion, I have to make a permanent link to that text file. How to get different text file links? pl. guide.
Meenakshi.R|||Meenakshi,
If each record has to show different file, then you can use formula.
Do the same procedure that I told you except that instead of selecting the file, there is button labelled x-2 near text box. Click that and if the field it self represents the file name, then write this
{FieldName}|||Madhi,
I tried with your option. But when the report is run, the value stored in the field (ie) the file name comes without any hyperlink. No provision for clicking. Kindly guide me.

Meenakshi.R|||Which version of Crystal Report are you using?|||Sir,
The version of the crystal report is 8.0
Meenakshi.R|||Meenakshi,
I dont know where it goes wrong
Refer this (http://support.businessobjects.com/library/kbase/articles/c2006151.asp)|||Madhi,
Referred the article. Done as per the instructions. But still I am getting the field value only without the hyperlink. Any other solution?

Meenakshi.R|||I have a report where each record brings back a field with the path of a different image file. Each record in the details section prints out the word "Image" as a link, which I have set up as follows:

1. Created a formula which has nothing more in it than the word "Image". Placed into details section of report.
2. Click Format Field on this formula, go to Hyperlink tab. Choose 'A Website on the Internet', then open the formula box for Website Address.
3. In here, place the field from the database.

My images are available via a http server, but you may choose to use one of the other options there instead (eg 'A File' instead of 'A Website on the Internet'.|||Hai,
Created a formula. Placed in the detail section. Using format option, I have made a hyperlink by choosing the option Hyperlink from a file. With the formula button (hyperlink screen), I specified the field value. During run time, the formula name comes (but without hyperlink option). What to do?|||Should work, try debugging. I'd suggest copying the formula you are using to create the hyperlink into a regular formula and seeing what comes out, ie what it is trying to use to create this hyperlink. You might find that it has an invalid path, or is coming back blank, etc...|||Tried tried. I saved the report with field in the detail section by choosing "a file" from the hyperlink option, run the report, the field value stored in the field comes without hyperlink option. When viewing the report in design view, the hyperlink option shows 'a website on the internet'. I don't know why? pl. explain in detail.
Meenakshi.R|||My suggestion is that your file path is invalid. Test to see what CR thinks is in that field, for starters.

Ie, if you have a url stored in your database field and http:// already exists, you could end up with something like http://http://google.com

In my report, I can click on the field to open a file, provided that file path is correct. I typed C:\temp\test.txt into the File Name box. However, changing it to C:\temp\test1.txt simply does nothing as this file does not exist.

Also note that the field may be a hyperlink but will appear to be just a regular field until you mouse over. (ie, if you want it to appear as a hyperlink should then you will have to underline and colour it yourself).|||Sir,
I have created a fresh report and do all the things. When I click the preview button in Crystal report screen, I am able to click the hyperlink, and the corresponding file stored in the field gets opened. When this report is accessed via a VB program coding, simply the file name is displayed and I could not click the hyperlink. Pl. help me.

Meenakshi.R

Crystal 9 hyperlink text

I am formating text by adding a hyperlink that looks like this:

"https://IQuoteSummary.asp?vid=" & {v_L.VersionId}&"&lid=" &
{Locations.LocationId}

Both database fields are type number

The url enters the address:
"https://IQuoteSummary.asp?vid=1,521.00&lid=12.00"
It works when I run the report in crystal but after publishing it on
the crystal publishing wizard thing, I get those weird numbers.
I need these numbers as ints and without a comma. I tried changing the
formatting on the database fields on the report but that doesn't work.
Any idea how to get the url to print like this:
"https://IQuoteSummary.asp?vid=1521&lid=12"

ThanksFound it:

"http://blahblah/page.asp?=" + totext({field}, 0, "")

The zero removes the decimals and the third argument apparently is the
thousands separator.

change the owner of your 'pubs' database to 'sa' and turn on the DB_CHAINING
