Crystal Running Group Total equivilent in Report Services

I'm trying to use Reporting Services Developer edition with SQL Server 2000
and Visual Studio 2003. Net to create a report that already existed in
Crystal Reports 8.5 so that the report can be distributed via email and other
things that Report Services allows.
The Crystal Report uses something called a 'Running Total' field that
summarizes a field and evaluates a value for each chance of the field and
resets the value on the change of a group.
Who would you go about solving this problem in Report Services?

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best approach to migrating
Crystal Reports to SQL Reporting Services?There isn't a "quick" convert option - Crystal being a proprietary report
format limits you from stripping out information about the report. You could
use the "report defintion" option to find out details about the report,
etc...but this is purely for informational purposes
The reality is you will have to re-build your reports. The only reusable
components would be the SQL statement, if optimized, or other source info
(stored proc's, etc...). The rest would be fresh.

Thanks for the reply. We've already moved forward doing it manually and
have actually completed the migration. Once we developed kind of a process
or pattern for doing the conversion, it wasn't too bad.

Aside from using a Migration partner, there is not much else that can
be done outside of maybe designing some sort of custom migration

Is there any way I can convert Crystal reports to Reporting Services instead of creating reports again in Reporting Services?

There are way too many Crystal Reports out there in the world and I would love to see more of them converted to Reporting Services. Therein lies the problem. I had heard that Crystal (now BusinessObjects) had blocked companies, like Hitachi, from building converters, because they would be reverse engineering (or using the APIs to reverse engineer) the .rpt files, and that would violate the license agreement.

Microsoft only provides migration guidance, but I see that one company, KTL Solutions, has a conversion product available, and another company, Jeff-Net is offering a $25/report conversion service at rpttordl.com.

There do seem to be a lot of "migration partners" (gack!) listed in various places.

Crystal Report. new with web services

Hi everybody

I want to publish my reports as a web service and then consume them from a web application. However all the reports should be exportable to excel, word, pdf format. I tried to write my web service on my own and couldnt succeed. Web service only returns xml schema and how do i get the final report from web services. Publishing them as a web service individually doesnt work because then i cant use the report engine object model which eliminates my success in exporting

In my experience, RS has provided a better reporting solution, especially if you already have a SQL server running. I've been in charge of moving my company's Crystal reports to RS, and coming in new to both, I've found RS to be smoother and easier to handle. It has its quirks, espeically being a younger product. I've found it has been exceptional for our purposes, which include a lot of large, number comparison reports.
Were I in your shoes, I would definately lean toward RS, but granted, that's just my opinion. Good luck with it all,

Crystal Alerts but in Reporting services

In Crystal Reports you can setup Alerts to alert you to a certain criteria when ever you refresh the report..

Is this possible within Reporting services?

If so how do you set them up?

I'm not sure how well it would work for you because I am not sure of your criteria, but you could add a reference to System.Windows.Forms and then add code to the code window that displays a message box if certain criteria is met. If you can give me an example of your criteria I can try to give you an example.

This is somewhat of a hack, but it should work:

Add a reference to System.Windows.Forms
In the code window, add a function similar to the following:

function ShowMessage(value as decimal) as decimal

If value < 25 then System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox.Show("Your Message")
ShowMessage = value
End function

In the field where you have the summary:

Add the following expression:
=Code.ShowMessage(Sum(FieldToSum,ScopeName))

I hope this helps. I've never used alerts in Crystal, but this will show a message box. You could also change the color of the field by using an expression if this is a better option for you. You may want to set a variable to only show the message once if multiple values are < 25.

|||This is not possible with Reporting Services. If you use the ReportViewer control you can trap events but not down to the data changes. With web reporting and rendering the report in a frame, you may try to get try to get a reference to the field but to track the change you need to track the old value so it will hairy.|||Thanks guys for all your help|||

help!|||You need to use a matrix to achieve this, instead of a table.
Then have categories as row groups and days as column groups.
Add subtotals to both groups to have the totals.
Add a static column to the data field to have your Col2s.
Matrixes can be a bit confusing at first, but this is definately the control
you need to use.

Cross Database Join in a Data Source View

Hi,

Is it possible to do a cross database join in a report services data source view? It doesn't look like it.

If not I was thinking of linking the table into the other database.

Yes, you can do joins to other databases.

For example:

select table1.col1

from db1.dbo.table1 t1

inner join db2.dbo.table2 t2 on t1.col1 = t2.col2

|||In the interest of reuse I would like to reference two Data Source Views in the Model. I have a database that has static database for everyone and a separate database for every customer? Is that possible?|||If I add a related table from another database the model blows up when I autogenerate and says it can't find dbo.Table. It shouldn't be dbo.Table it should be database.dbo.Table. If I explore the data it works fine.

CRM side-by-side install

I've installed SQL Reporting Services on the same server
as CRM1.2 install. There were a couple minor issues that
were fixed (none of which involved any of the CRM .config
files or IIS permissions for the CRM site). Now when i
try to open CRM i get an error stating a problem with a
config file.

The server is a dual processor Windows 2000 server with 1
GB ram. All the latest patches are applied.
I have restarted all the CRM services and am able to get
to the point where it asks for login information. It's
upon loading the initial CRM page that i get this error.
There isn't anything in the event log that correlates
with this error.
Any ideas?Jason-
Did you ever find a fix for this problem? I'm getting the same error on our
server and on our client's server as well. On our server we get the error
when we try to access CRM, but the Report Manager runs fine. On our client's
server CRM runs fine, but the error occurs when I try to access Report
Manager.
I did notice that there was already a "Reports" folder from CRM when I was
installing Reporting Services, so I changed the name of the install folder at
the time, so that's not the issue.
