crystal reports XI with ascii file

hello CR users,
i'am nearly completely new in the CR field, so sorry for my question...

i have a big ascii file about 300mb. how can i use this file within CR?
is there any way to convert this ascii file into a excel file ore wathever so i can use it.
smaller pieces of this file i can convert into a 'comma separately' csv file.
but there is no well formatet column separation...

i would be very happy if there is somebody out there how wuold post a short solution for this...
thanks HagenSo do you want to show the Ascii values in the report?

Crystal Reports Version Selection

I have ten users who need to access a single server operating crystal. Currently looking at around 200 reports max being generated (not per day). I was wondering what the latest version available to me would be suitable which can manage atleast 10 concurrently. Also does MSDE come with it and is it sufficient to handle this small solution. Have searched the net but not exactly sure what Im looking for.

Crystal Reports chart

I have a report That list phone calls that are received by users. These calls are grouped by user, then by Month, week, day and hour. I want to make a chart that shows the calls by day of week (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc) and this chart will be in the footer of the user group ( The chart will show the total calls that were recieved in each day of the week by that user).

The way i have done it was: In the Data tab of the "Chart Expert" option "Placement - Place chart:" i selected the "for each" user group (This is the first group).

In the option "On change of" i put FF_GetWeekday
(a formula field to get the day of the week")

In the option "Show values" i selected the field "table.call_id" to count all the calls that were recieved in each day of the week by each user. This works fine, the problem is that i need to count only the calls that were answered (without the lost calls) by the user and with a call duration greater than 0 seconds.
The chart expert dont have any option to validate the counting of the calls.

I have tried instead of the field "table.call_id", using a formula field with a code something like:
If table.call_duration>0 and table.call_type="Answered" then "{table.call_id}"
but the result is always the correct+1, for example if i have 30 calls in monday for user "USER1" then in the chart appears 31

I dont know what i am doing wrong or if what i am trying to do is possible.

can you help me?

Thank YouSounds to me as if you need to "reset" ( to zero) the value of the formula field ("{table.call_id}") each time you begin a new group, a new user.

Or try a running total where you want to evaluate when
table.call_duration>0 and table.call_type="Answered" and reset on user.

Crystal reports and page breaks

I have a requirement from our users that they want to add page breaks into the middle of a text field in our application.

This text is being printed in a Crystal report, so they would have the facility then to split text over 1 or more pages without coding needed to be done.

Is it possible to type in (use of varous keys e.g. Ctrl + Shift + A) a special character in the text field which Crystal Reports will process as a new page?

Any assistance would be gratefully received.you can use chr(13). Create new formula having this code

left({field},100)+chr(13)+mid({field},101,len({Feidl})

and set can grow propery to true

Crystal Reports 9 - end user printing problem

Crystal generates reports based on user parameters from my .asp program. It works fine from all but one users PC. This user prints "chinese" or "garbage" when they hit the print button. It doesn't matter what printer they print to, the screen displays fine, but the report is "garbage." Any suggestions?If it's just the one computer, maybe you need update the printer drivers?

Crystal Reports 7 using wrong date format

Whenever one of my users prints any of our reports, the date is in dd/mm/yyyy format, when it should be in mm/dd/yyyy format. This might be more of a Windows settings issue rather than a CR7 issue, but it only seems to do this when a CR7 report is printed, anything else involving a date in any other software prints/displays correctly. I have checked the regional settings on their computer and they are all set properly. Uninstalling and reinstalling the CR7 runtime files didn't seem to help either.

Does anyone know if CR7 stores its own date formatting information? Thank you in advance.Use Field Formatting to set the format of the date. Else you can covert the date into a string also.

In case you need to pass date as a parameter, Crystal Reports allows you to pass the date in three pieces (Date, Month and Year).

Hope you will solve the problem.

Crystal Reports 4.6 not working in XP

My application uses Crystal Reports 4.6 & Visual Basic 6.0. The database is in MS Access 97.

It works on Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000. My users just upgraded to Windows XP.
But, in Windows XP the report is not shown and no error with .PrintReport(). When I tried with .Action = 1, it shows 2 errors.

1)
Runtime error '5':
Invalid procedure call or argument

2)
Error Number: 20535
Unable to connect: incorrect session parameters.

And the application terminates!

This is the code.

With crwReport
.Destination = crptToWindow
.WindowTitle = "Bill"
.WindowState = crptMaximized
.ReportFileName = "D:\reports\Bill.rpt"
.DataFiles(0) = "D:\client.mdb"
.Action = 1
End With

I have tried creating setup from Package & Deployment Wizard and Visual Studio Installer 1.1 but neither work for Crystal Reports...

I tried to install Crystal Reports 4.6 on user's machine but still it is not working!

The only ultimate solution I got is to install Visual Studio 6.0 on user's machine. Heck, thats a lame way... and my client can't afford it.

Isn't there any other better way??i had the same problem and i was able to get it to work by doing this: download the update here: http://www.randem.com/support.html
Automatic OS Updater for MDAC/JET/DCOM

this is the update that the computer needs for access runtime files and vb files... i installed this on the other xp computer and it fixxed the errors i was havin openin the reports... i stuggld with this for a long time
hope this works...

Crystal Enterprise Question

Hello,

I have a report that I have put in Crystal Enterprise so that users can go and run the report as necessary. The report has 3 parameters that the users will choose when they run the report. One is a location, the other is a date (picks from a calendar), and the other is a boolean to choose if they want a graph printed with the report or not.

Here's my question. I would like to set up this same report as a scheduled job to automatically email to two people each day. I know which facility to put in and true for the boolean parameters, but how can I tell it to do it for the previous date when it's expecting someone to pick from a calendar? Each day's email will have stats from the day before.

I really don't want to have to maintain two reports for this if at all possible.

Thanks for any suggestions!
NMellickPass your date of birth as the date parameter and in the selection formula add code to check the parameter and if it's your b-day then change to todays date minus 1.

Crystal Design view

Hi,
How can prevent regular crystal report users from accessing the design view of my reports?
Your help is appreciated
Thanks
SayedOne way is to use front end application like vb and show the report from there

Crosssell in cube? How?

Hi guys, I had some users ask me this the other day and I'm not even sure where to start...

We have a dimension (product) which has a one to many relationship with our customer fact table. In this configuration, we can easily see how many customers own each product.

What the user is requesting is to be able to see how many customers have different product combinations. For example, how many customers have product A and B? Or A, B and C?

Is there any way to do this in a cube?

thanks!

Data Mining is what you're going to want to use probably. Take a look at this and see if that answers your question:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=820872&SiteID=1

If you've got data mining question, try the Data Mining forum:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=81&SiteID=1

If you want to try doing this yourself with some MDX, something like the following might do the trick:

select {} on 0,

Intersect(

Exists(

[Customer].[Customer].[Customer].Members

,([Date].[Calendar].[June 2004],[Product].[Category].[Bikes])

,"Internet Sales"

)

,Exists(

[Customer].[Customer].[Customer].Members

,([Date].[Calendar].[June 2004],[Product].[Category].[Clothing])

,"Internet Sales"

)

)

on 1

from [Adventure Works]

There are a bunch of ways to write that, but this way gets the people who bought bikes this month, then the people who bought clothing this month, then finds where those customers are in both sets.

|||

Thanks for your response. I read up on data mining and produced a report for my useres.. they were very pleased but it appears that hit all around the issue but not quite right on. What they need in the cube is basically to use the product dimension twice, once as a filter and once as a slicer. So you can set the filter to 'Bikes' and then slice the result by products, showing the other products owned by people who own bikes. Is this possible via the cube browser?

|||What if you added the Product dimension to the cube a second time. It would be a role-playing dimension so wouldn't require duplicate storage. Then you could filter by one Product dimension and put the other Product dimension (maybe call it "Also Bought Products"?) on columns. That's my thought for letting users do it themselves in a cube browser.|||

Thanks for your response. I tried that. I created a 2nd product dimension as role-playnig, set the relationships the same as the original product dimension and processed the cube.

What happens is that when I set a filter with the original product dimension to "Product A" and slice by the "Other products" dimension, only "Product A" is shown. Maybe I have the relationships for the 2nd product dimension incorrect?

|||

You followed my instructions. I left out one important detail. Your fact table needs to relate to your Product dimensions via a many-to-many relationship, not a regular relationship. So you'll need to pull ProductKey out of your fact table and put it in another fact table. Look at the Sales Reasons in Adventure Works as I think it's m2m. Basically you do the following:

Fact --> IntermediateDimension --> BridgeTable --> M2M_Dimension

You'll do that twice, and the M2M_Dimension will be Products and Other Products. Your IntermediateDimension should probably be Customers or something like that. Then your BridgeTable needs to be built as a measure group in the cube with dimension relationships to Customer, Products, and Other Products. Then you should be able to select Products or Other Products as m2m dimension relationships from your original Fact table

.

Hope that helps. Sorry it's hard to describe. I think that will work.

|||

Thanks a lot for your help but I still can't seem to get this going... maybe if I'm more specific...

There's a GREAT paper out there on many to many relationships in SSAS 2005 here --> http://www.sqlbi.eu/Default.aspx?tabid=80

My setup is exactly like the first scenerio shown in this paper. Using this example, I want to use the Dim_Account dimension to filter the accounts and also slice by the same dimension, thus showing the other accounts owned by the type of account in the filter. Would you be so kind as to address this example?

Thanks SO much!

|||

Fact --> IntermediateDimension --> BridgeTable --> M2M_Dimension

So in Marco's first example, Fact_Balance is the Fact table, Dim_Account is the IntermediateDimension, Factless_AccountCustomer is what I called BridgeTable, and Dim_Customer is the M2M_Dimension. Your Dimension Usage tab in the cube designer will show a relationship from the Fact_Balance measure group to the Dim_Customer dimension as a many-to-many relationship.

You'll just need to repeat all of the above twice for both of your product dimensions. Hope this works out for you.

Was that what you meant to "address this example"?

Cross-Database View Permissions

I have a view in database1 that uses views in database2.
My DBA says I must give users DATA READER permissions to
the tables referenced by the database2 views. I am trying
to keep customers OUT of the tables, only allowing access
thru views.
Do I really have to give DATA READER to the tables in
database2 to get my cross-database view references to work?It depends on whether you allow cross database ownership chaining. This is a
configurable option post SP3 wheras prior to that it was implicit. Basically
if all the views and tables have the same owner e.g. dbo and the databases
themselves are owned by the same login e.g. sa then users with permissions
to select from a view in database1 don't need any explicit permissions on
objects in database2 - they do still require access though.Post SP3 this is
configured using sp_configure 'Cross DB Ownership Chaining' and sp_dboption
with the 'db chaining' option. See BOL for more on cross database ownership
chaining.

login in order for the dbo-owned object ownership chain to be unbroken.
Your users still need a security context in database2 but no permissions or
role memberships need to be granted if objects are only accessed indirectly
via referencing database1 objects.
Hope this helps.

cross platform derived table query

It's like this, I have a table of searchstrings that I want to list based on unique searchstrings and unique users(because some users search for the exact same thing many times)

table tbl_savesearch
id, searchStr, remote_addr, was_answered

This is the query that works on MS SQL server, but I can't get to work in MySQL:

SELECT ss, COUNT(DISTINCT ra) AS theCount
FROM (SELECT DISTINCT searchStr AS ss, remote_addr AS ra FROM tbl_savesearch) tb
GROUP BY ss
ORDER BY theCount DESC

I checked the mysql documentation and it seems mysql needs to put in an "as" before "tb", but it still won't work.

Is there a standard for this question, some way that I can make it work on both platforms?

Edit: is this thing really called derived table or is it just a subquery? English is not my native language.A subquery in the FROM clause is usually called an "inline view" (or at least, it is in Oracle circles). Whether mySQL supports inline views at all, I don't know.

Cross Domain report authentication

Hi all,
I have a reporting server(with reports) on "domain1". and the users who
login into web applications which is on a different domain say
"domain2" to access the reports.
I used to have a url access to the reporting server. but when the user
tries to generate a report it ask for authentication (the login dialog
window ). As the user is not on the same domain as the reports server I
created a user on the reports server machine and passed on the user
name and password, so that users can login with that id/password. It
worked fine but with the login dialog window popping up.
Now they want to get rid of the pop up login dialog window.
I looked at some books and tried to use a web service instead of a url
access to run reports. but it throws me some soap exception.
Exception below:
--

I have tried changing the settings on the IIS for the reportserver but
of no use.
I was thinking if I had to implement Custom Secuirty Extenstions.
Do I have to do that'
I am trying to figure out how easy would that be to do.
Can anyone guide me step by step procedure to get wat I am trying to
achieve. I just dont need the login dialog window to come up and need
to pre authenticate the user whenever he logs into the web application
some way.
Any code snippets/helpful links or insight on how to workaround this
problem will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot in advance.

but it gives me an

You may implement custom authentication if you want to get rid of
windows one at all.
I tryed few ways:
1) using windows account as a type of transport to identify real person
mapped onto it. (then you need some kind of lookup mechanism to
impersonate windows user on server side)
2) using IP dinamically mapped to some kind of authority.
this may sound unsecure, but works excellent in certain environments
(for small intranets with unique IPs and proxy forbidden).
I used second approach with Domino server particularly,where notes user
IP being used to identify person on RS side.No bloody popups,-no nothing :)|||Hey Pisla,
Thanks a lot for the insight.
Can you tell me how to do the step 2 you have mentioned. I am really
clueless of wat you are talking.
Like your step 1, I tried to pass the windows credentials in the
LogonUser method ...hardcoded them ...but still it doesnt authenticate
the cookie on the rs server.
I very badly need to get this popup thing go.HELP.

Kalyan, we're about to sell this solution so i'm afraid i may not just
give it to you for free.
You may play thou with custom authentication example to implement the
same stuff.|||Hi Pisla,
Can you tell me when you will be ready with the solution.
May be I can buy it from you guys. I have given up on the problem.
Its driving me crazy..
Please let me know if I can buy the solution and also the price.
Thanks a lot for the Help.
Kalyan.|||Kalyan,
I presume you are using SQL 2000 RS. By default the SQLRS supports only
windows authentication so you woudn't be able to display the reports outside
your domain using ReportViewer control which internally uses URL invocation
mechanism.
To get rid of this, you need to use Reporting Services Web Service which is
provided as part of SQL2000 RS installation. Just create a proxy and request
the type of format you want by creating a Network Crenditials class of your
choice of user. The render method call will return you the byte array, which
you can write to response object or whatever you need to do with that. The
flip side of it is you need to code for all the pagination, formatting using
webservice calls. So more programming.
Thanks,

Cross Database Permission

I have a stored procedure that I created on one database with permission
granted to a select group of users. The proc grabs information from another
database on the same server. When users with permissions to the proc try to
run it, they get permission errors saying that they do not have permissions
to access the other database that is referenced in the proc. It was my
understanding that when you run a proc, it runs under the context of the proc
creator (in this case dbo), otherwise you have to grant select, insert,
update, etc. on all tables that your proc references. Does this not work
cross database?Clark,
You do not mention which version of SQL Server you are using, but both 2000
and 2005 have in the Books Online index an entry for "cross-database
permissions" which you should read.
Basically, the ownership-chain is broken at a database boundary as I quote:
"Cross-database permissions are not allowed; permissions can be granted only
to users in the current database for objects and statements in the current
database. If a user needs permissions to objects in another database, create
the user account in the other database, or grant the user account access to
the other database, as well as the current database."
There is a setting to turn on "cross database ownership chains", but that is
not recommended due to the (potentially serious) security side-effects.

chaining disabled. So I take it dbo does not have cross database access,
which makes sense now that I think about. Thanks.

1 - Cross-Database Ownership Chaining should be enabled
2 - If the owner of the sp is the owner of the objects being referenced from
the other db, then there should be no problem, but if the owner of the sp
just has rights to "select", then SS will check if the one executing the sp
also has "select" right on those objects.
